For our family business, which is currently managed by the 4th generation, future viability and sustainable action are extremely important. We do not want to rest on our laurels, on the contrary. We see the Harz Mountains and the effects of climate change on our doorstep. It is therefore very important to us to make the right decisions, to constantly question ourselves and not to leave it up to others to act for the future. We are constantly putting our production, packaging, logistics, mobility and employee commitment to the test and looking for optimization potential.

CLIMATE PROTECTION IN THE COMPANY.

CO2 ACCOUNTING: WE CAN "INITIATE" - EVEN CHANGES

In 2023, we applied to take part in the CO₂Plan network project and were accepted. This makes us part of a project supported by the Göttingen Region Energy Agency and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) over three years. The aim of the project is to help small and medium-sized companies such as Schierker Feuerstein to record their carbon footprints and to manage their own reduction paths on a scientific basis and become climate-neutral. We are delighted to be one of the companies in the region participating in the project.

CLIMATE PROTECTION IN THE REGION.

PLANTING TREES - FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR HOMELAND

We are also happy to actively support climate protection in the region with our employees. In 2023 and 2024, we supported the heiermann4future tree planting campaign with generous donations of seedlings and planting power from our Schierker team. Numerous volunteers from our company and other local helpers actively participated and planted a total of around 25,000 seedlings at heiermann4future in 2024.

We advertised the 2024 planting campaign for two months in advance via our flagship store in Schierke and our online store under the motto "One seedling for every purchase". Our customers gave us great support and the feedback was consistently positive.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CARTONS - SCHIERKER 0.7 l IN WELLPAPER ON THE GO

LESS RAW MATERIAL AND LESS WEIGHT

Our outer cartons are already made from 100 % recycled material, partly from solid cardboard and partly from corrugated cardboard. It is important to us that natural resources are conserved and only as many are used as are absolutely necessary. That is why we do everything we can to continuously optimize our packaging. One example of this is the outer carton for the 0.7 l SCHIERKER FEUERSTEIN bottle, which was previously made from recycled solid cardboard. Today, this outer carton is made from recycled corrugated cardboard.

Why have we made this change? The outer carton for the 0.7 l bottle is the most important in our portfolio in terms of volume. Corrugated cardboard is more environmentally friendly because it requires less raw material for the same packaging thickness. Corrugated board is also lighter than solid board. The lower weight not only reduces transport costs, but also leads to a lower environmental impact from transportation. By switching to corrugated cardboard, we are therefore making a significant contribution to protecting the environment and using our resources sustainably. Whenever possible, we check our cardboard packaging and optimize it sensibly.

HOW OUR PRODUCTS ARRIVE SAFELY

Despite digitalization, we generate paper waste every day: old newspapers, documents, printouts, etc. Instead of throwing them away, we collect them carefully. We use this paper waste to make our own filling material for the parcels in the online store. We also collect and reuse used cardboard boxes that are still in good condition and also use them to send the online store's parcels. This is how we conserve resources. When our customers receive such a parcel, this is noted on the delivery bill with a "REUSED PACKAGING" stamp.

SCHIERKER BANNERS IN THE HARZ - WHO DOESN'T KNOW THEM?

UPCYCLING INSTEAD OF WASTE

Shooting festival in Bartolfelde, forest bathing in Elend, Easter bonfire in Herzberg - our homeland, the Harz Mountains, thrives on its colorful, lively festivals and events. And wherever there are celebrations, Schierker Feuerstein is there too. We support the events with effective advertising banners. A real win-win: the organizers save on expensive advertising banners, and Schierker Feuerstein is present at the events.

But what happens to the banners that have to be discarded? We also asked ourselves this question and, like many brands that make bags and other products from truck tarpaulins, found a sustainable solution.

Our old event banners are now transformed into limited edition shopping bags and glasses and pencil cases. These unique pieces carry the stories of past festivals. But we are not doing this alone: we have gained the Harz-Weser-Werke in Northeim as a regional partner. Around 270 people with intellectual disabilities work there with heart and dedication in various professions. The unique Schierker items were created in the textile processing department in Northeim.

These unique items are now available to buy in our online store and at our head office in Schierker. The proceeds go back to the Harz-Weser-Werke - a great cause, we think.
